Savor the Summer in Wisconsin Poetry Challenge: Day 6 Cicada

Undulating rattlesnake call

from high in your treetop home,

pest to many

prize to me,

I wait all year

to dance to your beat,

sway in the August heat

so heavy

even the hummingbirds are grounded.

Never seen,

feet stuck tight to branch or bark

until abandoned

your skeleton

falls gently to the ground.
